Co-op Teens Power Texas 2012 Video Contest Winner

Comanche EC youth wins 2012 grand prize

Ryan Paskewitz of Zephyr, son of Comanche EC members Curtis and Paula Paskewitz, is the grand prizewinner of the 2012 Co-op Teens Power Texas video contest. Paskewitz’s entry, “Mr. Electricity,” was produced in collaboration with Zephyr High School math teacher Dena Peters and the school’s technology director, Terrell Hess.

The contest, sponsored by Texas Co-op Power magazine in conjunction with electric cooperatives across Texas, asked students in grades 6 through 12 to create a 30- to 60- second commercial promoting their respective electric cooperative. You can view this year’s winning videos, along with all of this year’s entries, on our YouTube page.

The winning video features Paskewitz as a masked superhero saving a woman in distress over a high electricity bill, played by Peters. Paskewitz talks about “saving a buck or two on your electricity” by using a more energy-efficient water heater and CFLs.

Paskewitz will receive $1,500, which he plans to use towards a trip to Japan. As the sponsoring school, Zephyr High School will receive $1,000.

Kenton Sorke of Joshua, son of United Cooperative Services members Ingo and Nancy Sorke, is the second-place winner of $500, which was determined by most YouTube views. Sorke’s video, “DOs and DON’Ts of Energy Conservation,” was watched more than 2,200 times.

Winners in other judging categories received $250 for excellence in:

Creativity: “A Day in the Life of a Bowie-Cass Safety Officer” by Jacob Morris of Mt. Pleasant, son of Bowie-Cass EC members Ben and Michelle Morris.

Educational Value: “You Can (Energy Ad)” by Fernando Echeverria of Argyle, son of CoServ Electric members Pedro and Norma Echeverria.
