Focus on Texas: Power

Our readers found power in expected and unexpected places

We know the power of a good country song, and rocker Huey Lewis knows the power of love—but we wondered how power moves Texans. Here are some of the ways.

Jim Browder, HILCO EC: “A woodpecker inspects a HILCO power line.”

Mark Husfeld, Navasota Valley EC: Near a substation in Navasota after a thunderstorm.

Danny Pickens, Cherokee County EC: “A Ferris wheel at the East Texas Fair is powered up for fun.”

Jacqueline Acuff, Nueces EC: “Lightning shows the power of nature right in my backyard.”

Johnathan Kana, Bluebonnet EC: “Snapped this using a camera phone near the Seaholm District of Austin, ironically only a block away from the original Austin Energy power plant.”

Web Extra: Faith Caughron, Trinity Valley EC: “Trinity Valley EC moved a pole [and] installed a new one to renew our power. These guys are polite and professional in the calm or the midst of storms.”

Web Extra: Jonnie England, Nueces EC: Wind turbines tower over a healthy cotton crop near Roscoe.

Web Extra: Bobby Norris, Pedernales EC: “The main plant facility at the Navajo Generating Station, as seen from Lake Powell in Page, Arizona.” The plant, the largest coal-fired power plant in the West, closed late last year.

Web Extra: Dan Parker, Tri-County EC: “Taken by a 9-year-old fascinated with the power of the wind.”

Web Extra: Tina Webb, Bluebonnet EC: “The power of water is the love of many. Fishing is a favorite pastime, and the pursuit of that big fish is captivating.”
