Focus on Texas: Giving Back

Helping hands reach out all across the state to make life better in ways large and small

Some say they’re just being neighborly, and some prefer to remain anonymous, but Texans really love to lend a helping hand. From hometown to downtown, these folks have hearts as big as Texas.

Heidi Frazier, Bluebonnet EC: As a Girl Scout troop leader for more than 15 years, Frazier has assisted Scouts with a number of community service activities. This year, her high school-age troop donated and installed a flagpole at the Caldwell Girl Scout House.

Madelaine Pack, Tri-County EC: Pack and Melony Block serve dessert at the Tri-County EC Annual Meeting.

Web Extra: Pete Arredondo, Magic Valley EC: Pharr firefighters formed a nonprofit boxing gym to give back to the community. Firefighters coach and train kids, providing a supportive environment free of charge through a program that teaches discipline, respect, determination, life skills and responsibility and promotes community-oriented youth and an active, healthy lifestyle.

Web Extra: Mary Vehslage, CoServ: “Once a year, Living Proof Cancer Warriors, a nonprofit in Frisco, gets together for our annual golf tournament fundraiser, which raises money to support cancer patients in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. We currently support three cancer patients with the help of our sponsors, golfers, donors and devoted volunteers.”

Web Extra: Lisa Williams, Central Texas EC: “Moms and sons from North Texas gather to pull, pack and assemble boxes of supplies and treats for our troops overseas.”

Web Extra: Margaret Bonsante, Farmers EC: “This is what the season of giving is all about. A very big thank-you to the ladies of Sherri’s Boot Camp and the book club of Rockwall for making these delicious breads for the residents of the Village of Kaufman apartment complex. Also, thank you to Mica Thompson’s third grade class for the handmade ornaments.”
