Blueberries are the second most popular berry in the United States.
U.S. Senator John Cornyn’s favorite food is “anything that contains blueberries.”
A one-cup serving of fresh blueberries is packed 5 grams of fiber (more than most fruits and vegetables) and tallies only 80 calories.
Blueberries are an excellent source of manganese which plays an important role in bone development and in converting proteins, carbohydrates and fats in food into to energy.
There has been a 50 percent increase in consumption of blueberries during the last 10 years.
Native Americans in the Northwest Territory smoked wild blueberries to preserve them for the winter.
Blueberries contain no cholesterol or fat and are a good source of vitamin C.
Blueberries are ranked No. 1 in antioxidant activity compared with 40 other commercially available fruits and vegetables. That means a serving of blueberries has more of the antioxidant power you need to fight aging, cancer and heart disease.
Texas Blueberry season is from June to July.
When picking fresh blueberries, look for berries with a silvery “bloom;” this is a natural protective coating. They should be refrigerated as quickly as possible and kept dry. Do not wash until you are ready to use them. They will last for up to 2 weeks if stored properly.

One of the major summer music festivals in the United States, the Round Top Music Festival celebrates its 41st year in 2012. Founded by renowned concert pianist James Dick, it gathers more than 90 young talented young artists – accepted after auditions – for an intensive 6-week program. They are mentored and coached by more than 40 distinguished faculty members and participate in more than 20 orchestral and chamber music concerts performed in the outstanding Festival Concert Hall (1,000 seats) built over a period of 30 years. The Texas Festival Orchestra will perform 8 concerts conducted by eight different conductors from the United States (Michael Stern, Stefan Sanders and Emilio Colon), Canada (Charles Olivieri-Munroe), France (Pascal Verrot), Austria (Christoph Campestrini), Portugal (Pedro Carneiro) and China (Perry So.) Orchestral programs mix, as usual, the well known and not so well known repertoire and also a world premiere (Concerto for two percussionists and orchestra by Jonathan Leshnoff.) 8th Annual Jasper Air Show - Jasper, Texas

Plans are underway for the 8th Jasper Air show to be held on Saturday, March 17th and Sunday March 18th at the Jasper County Bell Field Airport, in Jasper, Texas. The gates open at 9 a.m. both days where you can enjoy the static display of airplanes on the ramp. On Saturday, the show will begin at noon and on Sunday at 1 p.m. The B-17, Texas Raiders, is an authentically restored World War II B-17 Bomber, painted in the colors of the 381st Bombardment Group, 533 rd Squadron. Owned by the Commemorative Air Force and managed/operated by the Gulf Coast Wing. Texas Raiders is headquartered in Spring, Texas at D.W. Hooks Airport. The public is invited to visit this vintage aircraft with walk-through tours for a modest tax-deductible donation. Also coming to the show this year is aerobatic Paul Fiala flying his Great Lakes plane, Randy Henderson - flying the Texas T-cart, John McGillis - flying the Extra plane. There will be demonstrations of the Texas Heat Wave radio remote control and Jasper Aero-modelers, Stu McCurdy’s R.V. Falcon Flight formation, and Al Saylor Parachute Jump team. Static Display will include Swamp Smith’s L-19 Bird dog and a couple of Stearmans. As always, lots of fun things for the kids, a bounce by the Space Walk of Jasper, and free airplane rides for children, 8 - 17 years of age by the EAA Chapter 1356 from Leesville, Louisiana. This year marks the 66th year of the Victoria Livestock Show, founded by the Victoria Jaycees. It is the largest event held in Victoria and surrounding counties each year with over 12,000 visitors. It is one of the few remaining livestock shows where 100% of the proceeds from each animal sold at the auction is paid to the 4-H/FFA Junior Exhibitors. Tarpley VFD Annual BBQ and Parade

The Tarpley VFD is hosting its 36th annual fundraiser on Sunday, September 4, 2011. This Labor Day Weekend event starts at 11:30 a.m. with a parade featuring families on horseback, local ranches and businesses, antique cars, decorated trailers, and maybe longhorn and even a camel. The serving line for a full BBQ plate starts immediately after the parade (usually around noon) and ends when the food runs out. We cook up over 1100 pounds of brisket so, hopefully it will last a while. Live music starts at noon and goes until about 1:00 when the Auction starts. The Raffle drawing is immediately after the Auction, about 2:30 p.m. This year the department will have tours of the newly renovated “Old Tarpley Schoolhouse” This school was built in 1924 to replace the previous building which burned. It served as Tarpley’s education center until 1951 when it closed and the local student began attending the Bandera, Utopia, or Medina schools. The Tarpley Volunteer Fire Department will use the building for training and meetings, as well as a place for community gatherings.

Bertram is perhaps best known for its Oatmeal Festival held each year on the Friday and Saturday before Labor Day (September 2 & 3, 2011). Begun in 1977 as a good-natured attempt to put neighboring Oatmeal back on the map after state map-makers ignored the tiny neighboring community, the festival has evolved into one of the wackiest, most imaginative small-town festivals anywhere. In 2011, Bertram celebrates 34 years of craziness and fun, and as always, it will actually “rain” oatmeal during the parade! (Watch out for Commander Caraway and the Oatmeal Air Force). Beginning with one Oompah band on a flat-bed trailer 11 years ago in Old Town Tomball, this festival has become an annual tradition in Tomball—and one of the best music/street festivals in Texas. Every year during the last weekend in March, festival-goers break out their Lederhosen and Dirndls “Go German” for the area's largest festival celebrating the heritage of the original German families that settled this area beginning in about 1840. In other words, in the case of German heritage there is much to celebrate in this part of Texas! The 11th Annual Tomball German Heritage Festival will be March 25, 26 and 27, 2011, located on the Old Downtown Streets of Tomball Texas near 201 S. Annual Holiday Home Tour in Georgetown

For more than 20 years, the Georgetown Heritage Society has presented the Holiday Home Tour of the most beautiful historical homes in Georgetown.

The five homes will be decorated in the festive seasonal fineries that celebrate the past and present of old Georgetown neighborhoods. The tour is characterized by a diverse selection of homes. The dates of the tour are December 11th and 12th from Noon to 5 p.m.

Advance tickets will be on sale at the Hill Country Book Store, Georgetown Visitor Center, Georgetown Antique Mall and the Sun City Community Association Office for the cost of $15. The Austin String Band Festival on October 15, 16 and 17 is at Camp Ben McCulloch near Driftwood (right across from the Salt Lick restaurant).

The festival features regional string band music on stage, many hands-on music and dance workshops, constant jamming, great food, camping and dancing.

Here’s the scoop: At the fourth annual Austin Ice Cream Festival, they’ll find out who can dish it out—and who can take it … as in the brain freeze that hits like a sledgehammer when you eat too much ice cream too fast. The festival -- set for August 14 at Waterloo Park (after an aborted attempt to move to the Domain) -- serves up some of the coolest contests around, starting with the ice-cream eating championship that’s open to the first 30 entrants ($10 entrance fee; competitors must be at least 18). Or, if you’d rather spoon it out than shovel it in, try your luck in the homemade ice-cream making contest. Just bring your recipe and ice cream maker ($20 entrance fee). Meanwhile, I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream … and whoever screams the loudest will win a contest that’s judged on decibel level, style and technique. All contest winners, including the maker of the best Popsicle stick sculpture, will receive the perfect trophy: an oversized, custom-made iron spoon.
