Fun Blueberry Facts

North America is the world’s leading blueberry producer, accounting for nearly 90% of world production at the present time.

Blueberries are the second most popular berry in the United States.

U.S. Senator John Cornyn’s favorite food is “anything that contains blueberries.”

A one-cup serving of fresh blueberries is packed 5 grams of fiber (more than most fruits and vegetables) and tallies only 80 calories.

Blueberries are an excellent source of manganese which plays an important role in bone development and in converting proteins, carbohydrates and fats in food into to energy.

There has been a 50 percent increase in consumption of blueberries during the last 10 years.

Native Americans in the Northwest Territory smoked wild blueberries to preserve them for the winter.

Blueberries contain no cholesterol or fat and are a good source of vitamin C.

Blueberries are ranked No. 1 in antioxidant activity compared with 40 other commercially available fruits and vegetables. That means a serving of blueberries has more of the antioxidant power you need to fight aging, cancer and heart disease.

Texas Blueberry season is from June to July.

When picking fresh blueberries, look for berries with a silvery “bloom;” this is a natural protective coating. They should be refrigerated as quickly as possible and kept dry. Do not wash until you are ready to use them. They will last for up to 2 weeks if stored properly.

This Labor Day Weekend event starts at 11:30 a.m. with a parade featuring families on horseback, local ranches and businesses, antique cars, decorated trailers, and maybe longhorn and even a camel. The serving line for a full BBQ plate starts immediately after the parade (usually around noon) and ends when the food runs out. We cook up over 1100 pounds of brisket so, hopefully it will last a while. Live music starts at noon and goes until about 1:00 when the Auction starts. The Raffle drawing is immediately after the Auction, about 2:30 p.m. This year the department will have tours of the newly renovated “Old Tarpley Schoolhouse” This school was built in 1924 to replace the previous building which burned. It served as Tarpley’s education center until 1951 when it closed and the local student began attending the Bandera, Utopia, or Medina schools. The Tarpley Volunteer Fire Department will use the building for training and meetings, as well as a place for community gatherings.

Oatmeal Festival

Bertram is perhaps best known for its Oatmeal Festival held each year on the Friday and Saturday before Labor Day (September 2 & 3, 2011). Begun in 1977 as a good-natured attempt to put neighboring Oatmeal back on the map after state map-makers ignored the tiny neighboring community, the festival has evolved into one of the wackiest, most imaginative small-town festivals anywhere. In 2011, Bertram celebrates 34 years of craziness and fun, and as always, it will actually “rain” oatmeal during the parade! (Watch out for Commander Caraway and the Oatmeal Air Force). Each year visitors come from far and wide, appreciating Bertram’s sense of humor and their small town pride and friendliness. Because the festival is sponsored by Ralston Foods Three Minutes Brand Oats, every event starts at 3 or 33 minutes past the hour. The festival begins on Friday night with a BBQ dinner and the Miss Oatmeal Pageant in Oatmeal. A trail-ride moves the festivities to Bertram on Saturday, which includes a fun-run, parade, cook-off, zany games, food, and arts and crafts, Mutton Bustin’ and more.

Upstart: Theatre/Performance Art/Movies/Music/Dancing

Two Day Family oriented festival planned with Movie Premiere, Performance Art, Theatre Production, Foam Machine and Music. Every year during the last weekend in March, festival-goers break out their Lederhosen and Dirndls “Go German” for the area's largest festival celebrating the heritage of the original German families that settled this area beginning in about 1840. In other words, in the case of German heritage there is much to celebrate in this part of Texas! The 11th Annual Tomball German Heritage Festival will be March 25, 26 and 27, 2011, located on the Old Downtown Streets of Tomball Texas near 201 S. Elm Street, Main Street (FM 2920), and Market Street. It is a Music/Street festival celebrating German and ethnic heritage with four stages of live music entertainment “happy music for happy people”, ethnic and festival food, beer, wine, 150 street vendors, all kinds of German souvenirs and clothing, arts crafts, antiques, the Heritage Center, German church service, fireworks, a carnival, pony rides, a petting zoo, strolling music makers, street performers and much, much more! Like Oktoberfest in March, it's huge fun for the whole family! You do not have to be German to enjoy this festival. It is fun for everyone, and there is no admission or parking fees. The Carnival opens Thursday evening March 24th with a special price for the “all you can ride” armband, and is located at the corner of Main and Cherry. On Friday 25th at 6pm till 10pm the music begins featuring Bluegrass Friday Night, Alpenfest, Chris Rybak, Walburg Boys, Tuba Meisters, Round Top Brass Band, Das Ist Lustig, Terry Cavanaugh, Kenny James, JungeMeisters, German Folk Dancers Rathkamp, de Texas KlopenDansers (Dutch), Scandinavian Folk Dancers, Aggie Wranglers, Ultimate Cloggers, Tomball Promanaders, Czech music makers, Valina and much more. Saturday 26th 10am till 10pm begins with the “tapping of the keg” and Willkommen ceremony for German exchange students and Tomball host families, and official opening by the Mayor of Tomball Gretchen Fagan. The music and dancing goes all day and into the night, and at 9pm a beautiful fireworks display at Tomball's newly restored Train Depot Plaza on the festival grounds. Bicycle Rally or Fahrradreisen sponsored by Texas Wheels of Justice will be Saturday the 27th. Sunday 27th 10am till 6pm begins with German Church Service/Brother Christen Tiews of St. Louis, Mo. The Biergartens open at noon on Sunday and the celebration goes on. You are all invited to the Tomball German Heritage Festival for a really great time.

19th Bunkhouse Art Expedition and Sale

Over 400 paintings, clay works, and handmade jewelry by 35 Texas artists on a working ranch in the Texas Hill Country. This year we celebrate our Texas heritage with a Texas Music Stage featuring well known and local country music artist. An estimated 120 unique and interesting street vendors will line Market and S. Walnut Streets, selling German Christmas items, arts and crafts, and much more. Visit the “Weihnachtshaus” inside the Community Center at 221 Market Street. The German Tent and music stage will be located near 201 Market Street. The tent will house the biergarten decorated in a German theme and Christmas lights. Tables and chairs will allow you to relax with your Dunkles Bier (dark bier), or a warm cup of Glühwein. Don’t miss the traditional Dutch Santa, Elf, live Christmas tree, clowns, and Royal Bavarian Guard. The Kinderfest (kid’s area) will provide entertainment and fun for the young visitors. It includes carnival rides, bungee-jumping, rock wall, petting zoo, pony ride, bounce house, and more. Enjoy the large outdoor movie screen, a hayride, and the Christmas lights tour. Food vendors will include traditional German food and drink, Glühwein (mulled wine), beer, Christmas Stollen & Homemade Breads, Kaffee und Kuchen (coffee and pastry), Bratwurst, red cabbage, sauerkraut, apple strudel, etc., and will, also, include festival foods like funnel cake, corn dogs, hot dogs, hamburgers, kettle korn, and barbeque. Highlights of the Festival will include: The lighting of the City Christmas tree, fireworks, music on the Depot Stage, Santa’s arrival, and the dedication and unveiling of the new bronze statue of Elmer Beckendorf representing the impact of Agriculture to Tomball. Here’s the scoop: At the fourth annual Austin Ice Cream Festival, they’ll find out who can dish it out—and who can take it … as in the brain freeze that hits like a sledgehammer when you eat too much ice cream too fast. The festival -- set for August 14 at Waterloo Park (after an aborted attempt to move to the Domain) -- serves up some of the coolest contests around, starting with the ice-cream eating championship that’s open to the first 30 entrants ($10 entrance fee; competitors must be at least 18). Or, if you’d rather spoon it out than shovel it in, try your luck in the homemade ice-cream making contest. Just bring your recipe and ice cream maker ($20 entrance fee). Meanwhile, I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream … and whoever screams the loudest will win a contest that’s judged on decibel level, style and technique. All contest winners, including the maker of the best Popsicle stick sculpture, will receive the perfect trophy: an oversized, custom-made iron spoon. Admission is $5 for adults, and children 8 and younger are admitted free.
