Camp Niwana Boys and Girls Camp Summer Session Dates

Camp Niwana is located in the beautiful Piney Woods of East Texas convenient to Houston, Beaumont and Lufkin areas. Campers, ages 6-17 stay in screened cabins in groups of 6-10 with counselors who direct daily activities: swimming, canoeing, archery, riflery, fishing, camping and cooking outdoors, crafts, art, sports and other games, and much much more. Camp Niwana makes a positive difference in the lives of youth by developing their potential for educated leadership, personal growth, and career success through environmental education and having fun with new friends. Weekly sessions start on Sundays and last through Saturday morning; June 10, 17. 24. July 1; concurrent day camp for local youth is available.

North America is the world’s leading blueberry producer, accounting for nearly 90% of world production at the present time.

Blueberries are the second most popular berry in the United States.
U.S. Senator John Cornyn’s favorite food is “anything that contains blueberries.”
A one-cup serving of fresh blueberries is packed 5 grams of fiber (more than most fruits and vegetables) and tallies only 80 calories.
Blueberries are an excellent source of manganese which plays an important role in bone development and in converting proteins, carbohydrates and fats in food into to energy.
There has been a 50 percent increase in consumption of blueberries during the last 10 years.
Native Americans in the Northwest Territory smoked wild blueberries to preserve them for the winter.
Blueberries contain no cholesterol or fat and are a good source of vitamin C.
Blueberries are ranked No. 1 in antioxidant activity compared with 40 other commercially available fruits and vegetables. That means a serving of blueberries has more of the antioxidant power you need to fight aging, cancer and heart disease.
Texas Blueberry season is from June to July.
When picking fresh blueberries, look for berries with a silvery “bloom;” this is a natural protective coating. They should be refrigerated as quickly as possible and kept dry. Do not wash until you are ready to use them. They will last for up to 2 weeks if stored properly.

8th Annual Jasper Air Show - Jasper, Texas

Plans are underway for the 8th Jasper Air show to be held on Saturday, March 17th and Sunday March 18th at the Jasper County Bell Field Airport, in Jasper, Texas. The gates open at 9 a.m. both days where you can enjoy the static display of airplanes on the ramp. On Saturday, the show will begin at noon and on Sunday at 1 p.m. The B-17, Texas Raiders, is an authentically restored World War II B-17 Bomber, painted in the colors of the 381st Bombardment Group, 533 rd Squadron. Owned by the Commemorative Air Force and managed/operated by the Gulf Coast Wing. Texas Raiders is headquartered in Spring, Texas at D.W. Hooks Airport. The public is invited to visit this vintage aircraft with walk-through tours for a modest tax-deductible donation. Also coming to the show this year is aerobatic Paul Fiala flying his Great Lakes plane, Randy Henderson - flying the Texas T-cart, John McGillis - flying the Extra plane. There will be demonstrations of the Texas Heat Wave radio remote control and Jasper Aero-modelers, Stu McCurdy’s R.V. Falcon Flight formation, and Al Saylor Parachute Jump team. Static Display will include Swamp Smith’s L-19 Bird dog and a couple of Stearmans. As always, lots of fun things for the kids, a bounce by the Space Walk of Jasper, and free airplane rides for children, 8 - 17 years of age by the EAA Chapter 1356 from Leesville, Louisiana. Lots of delicious food from funnel cakes, sausage on a stick, bar-b-que, ice cream and more! So come hungry! Admission is $10.00 for Adults 13 & up, $5.00 for kids, and 3 and under are free! Everyone is encouraged to bring lawn chairs, umbrellas, and sunscreen. Due to regulations by the Federal Aviation Administration no one will be allowed to enter with a backpack or coolers. No dogs or other animals will be permitted.

Nine Flags Christmas Festival

Historic downtown Nacogdoches will be transformed into a winter wonderland for the upcoming 2011 Nine Flags Christmas Festival with more than 3 million holiday lights, the largest lighted Christmas parade in East Texas, a dazzling fireworks display, a snow hill, a holiday tour of homes, a “Down-Home Christmas” cooking show, pictures with Santa, a holiday theatrical production, three Christmas movies in the park (How the Grinch Stole Christmas, The Polar Express, etc.), Santa’s workshop, a toy drive, breakfast with Santa, “Holiday in the Pines” shopping extravaganza, a 5K Jingle Bell Run, a bike ride and much more. The 15th annual celebration of Texas history & culture will be held Nov. 17 through Dec. 10 in Nacogdoches, located about 150 miles north of Houston via U.S. 59. Due to unforeseen family circumstances, upon the request of the Kickoff Coordinator, the 2011 Nesting Season Kickoff to be held Saturday, January 29th at Beaumont Botanical Gardens in Beaumont has been CANCELED. TBS apologizes for any inconvenience caused by this cancellation. The TBS treasurer will be issuing refund checks to registered attendees in the next two weeks.
