This will be our 24th year to put on “Cruisin’ Days” and it is our biggest event for the year. We have new and exciting things going on this year—including carnival rides—and we want to make sure we get the word out the best we can. This year’s theme is “Grease.” We will start off Friday, October 14th at 6 p.m. with the carnival, wristbands will be sold for an all-you-can-ride evening. Then Saturday will be our parade, vendor and craft booths, music, carnival, lots of fun food during the day. Then we’ll finish off the night with a BBQ brisket dinner and dance. Tarpley VFD Annual BBQ and Parade

The Tarpley VFD is hosting its 36th annual fundraiser on Sunday, September 4, 2011. This Labor Day Weekend event starts at 11:30 a.m. with a parade featuring families on horseback, local ranches and businesses, antique cars, decorated trailers, and maybe longhorn and even a camel. The serving line for a full BBQ plate starts immediately after the parade (usually around noon) and ends when the food runs out. We cook up over 1100 pounds of brisket so, hopefully it will last a while. Live music starts at noon and goes until about 1:00 when the Auction starts. The Raffle drawing is immediately after the Auction, about 2:30 p.m. This year the department will have tours of the newly renovated “Old Tarpley Schoolhouse” This school was built in 1924 to replace the previous building which burned. It served as Tarpley’s education center until 1951 when it closed and the local student began attending the Bandera, Utopia, or Medina schools. The Tarpley Volunteer Fire Department will use the building for training and meetings, as well as a place for community gatherings.

Bertram is perhaps best known for its Oatmeal Festival held each year on the Friday and Saturday before Labor Day (September 2 & 3, 2011). Begun in 1977 as a good-natured attempt to put neighboring Oatmeal back on the map after state map-makers ignored the tiny neighboring community, the festival has evolved into one of the wackiest, most imaginative small-town festivals anywhere. In 2011, Bertram celebrates 34 years of craziness and fun, and as always, it will actually “rain” oatmeal during the parade! (Watch out for Commander Caraway and the Oatmeal Air Force). Each year visitors come from far and wide, appreciating Bertram’s sense of humor and their small town pride and friendliness. Because the festival is sponsored by Ralston Foods Three Minutes Brand Oats, every event starts at 3 or 33 minutes past the hour. The festival begins on Friday night with a BBQ dinner and the Miss Oatmeal Pageant in Oatmeal. A trail-ride moves the festivities to Bertram on Saturday, which includes a fun-run, parade, cook-off, zany games, food, and arts and crafts, Mutton Bustin’ and more.

Build It. Bring It. Race It. Adult Soapbox Derby Returns to the Streets of Historic Downtown Marble Falls Texas. The 2nd Annual Marble Falls Soapbox Classic will take place June 17-19, 2011. For the second year in a row the historic downtown district of Marble Falls will be filled with racing, live music, vendors and excitement. “The purpose of this event is simple.” said event producer, Shannon Heep “To provide our community, its families and visitors with a weekend filled with fun, smiles, laughter and the excitement of racing”. Last year’s premiere event began a Father’s Day tradition for the Texas Hill Country. Do not confuse this event with the youth soapbox derby racing than began in the 1930’s. For more than 20 years, the Georgetown Heritage Society has presented the Holiday Home Tour of the most beautiful historical homes in Georgetown.

The five homes will be decorated in the festive seasonal fineries that celebrate the past and present of old Georgetown neighborhoods. The tour is characterized by a diverse selection of homes. The dates of the tour are December 11th and 12th from Noon to 5 p.m.

The Austin String Band Festival on October 15, 16 and 17 is at Camp Ben McCulloch near Driftwood (right across from the Salt Lick restaurant).

The festival features regional string band music on stage, many hands-on music and dance workshops, constant jamming, great food, camping and dancing.

Here’s the scoop: At the fourth annual Austin Ice Cream Festival, they’ll find out who can dish it out—and who can take it … as in the brain freeze that hits like a sledgehammer when you eat too much ice cream too fast. The festival -- set for August 14 at Waterloo Park (after an aborted attempt to move to the Domain) -- serves up some of the coolest contests around, starting with the ice-cream eating championship that’s open to the first 30 entrants ($10 entrance fee; competitors must be at least 18). Or, if you’d rather spoon it out than shovel it in, try your luck in the homemade ice-cream making contest. Just bring your recipe and ice cream maker ($20 entrance fee).
